Dance competitions are where studios from all over the country come together to have their best students compete for titles and prize money. A dance coach or the studio owner brings their studios competition team (a group of their best dancers) to the competitions. Each competition association has different sets of rules that participants are expected to follow, like how many routines a studio is allowed to enter into the competition, and behavior that is unacceptable (like violence).
Dance coaches can enter their students as:
1. Soloists: one dancer is onstage and compete against all the other soloists in their age group.
2. duets/duos: two dancers are onstage and compete against all other duos in that age group.
3. trios: three dancers are onstage
4. small groups: four to ten dancers are onstage
5. large group: more than ten dancers are onstage.
*All soloists, duos, trios, small groups, and large groups compete against all the other soloists, duos ect. in the their age group, regardless of differences in styles of dance. A hip hop soloist, for example, would be in direct competition with a ballet soloist. *
Also, you don't need to be part of a studio in order to compete. You'd just enter yourself into the competition as an "independent dancer".

Age groups (applies to all dancers):
1. Mini: 8 and under (sometimes 9 and under)
2. Junior: 9 to 11 (sometimes 10 to 11)
3. teen: 12 to 15 (preteen can be 12-13, and teen would just be 14-15)
4. Senior: 15 to 18 (most competitions don't allow anyone over 18 to compete)
Averaging ages: A dancer falls into a certain age group depending on when their birthday is during the year. For example, a 13 year old dancer born before January 1 would still fall into the Junior category. If they are born after January 1, they would be in teen or preteen.

Judges from all over the country (usually studio owners or working professionals) come to different competitions and score routines based on choreography, the dancers technique, and gives constructive criticisms and feedback for the dancer and teacher to review. The highest score a dancer can receive is 300. Dancers learn their scores during the awards ceremony of the dance competition. Most dance competitions just say the top ten dances and an overall high score. When a dancer wins first place they can win, regional, state, and national titles (and crowns) that look impressive on dance related resumes. Dancers can also win up to $1,000 in prize money.
